چکیده

In this paper, optimal content caching strategy is proposed to jointly minimize the cell average outage probability and fronthaul usage in cloud radio access network (Cloud-RAN). At first, an accurate closed form expression of the outage probability conditioned on the user’s location is presented, and the cell average outage probability is obtained through the composite Simpson’s integration. The caching strategy for jointly optimizing the cell average outage probability and fronthaul usage is then formulated as a weighted sum minimization problem, which is a nonlinear 0-1 integer NP-hard problem. In order to deal with the NP-hard problem, two heuristic algorithms are proposed in this paper. Firstly, a genetic algorithm (GA) based approach is proposed. Numerical results show that the performance of the proposed GA-based approach with significantly reduced computational complexity is close to the optimal performance achieved by exhaustive search based caching strategy. Secondly, in order to further reduce the computational complexity, a mode selection approach is proposed. Numerical results show that this approach can achieve near-optimal performance over a wide range of the weighting factors through a single computation.

Fundamental Limits on Delivery Time in Cloud- and Cache-Aided Heterogeneous Networks

A Fog radio access network (F-RAN) is considered as a network architecture candidate to meet the soaring demand in terms of reliability, spectral efficiency, and latency in next generation wireless networks. This architecture combines the benefits associated with centralized cloud processing and wireless edge caching enabling primarily low-latency transmission under moderate fronthaul capacity ...

On the Interplay Between Edge Caching and HARQ in Fog-RAN

In a Fog Radio Access Network (Fog-RAN), edge caching is combined with cloud-aided transmission in order to compensate for the limited hit probability of the caches at the base stations (BSs). Unlike the typical wired scenarios studied in the networking literature in which entire files are typically cached, recent research has suggested that fractional caching at the BSs of a wireless system ca...

Online Edge Caching and Wireless Delivery in Fog-Aided Networks with Dynamic Content Popularity

Fog Radio Access Network (F-RAN) architectures can leverage both cloud processing and edge caching for content delivery to the users. To this end, F-RAN utilizes caches at the edge nodes (ENs) and fronthaul links connecting a cloud processor to ENs. Assuming time-invariant content popularity, existing information-theoretic analyses of content delivery in F-RANs rely on offline caching with sepa...

Massive MIMO operation in partially centralized cloud radio access networks

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is considered as one of the key technologies in next generation cellular systems due to its higher multiplexing gain and energy efficiency. However, in a cloud radio access network (C-RAN) with massive MIMO, operation of many antennas incurs a huge amount of digital sampled data to be transported over the fronthaul link between a baseband unit (BBU)...

Generalized Compression Strategy for the Downlink Cloud Radio Access Network

This paper studies the downlink of a cloud radio access network (C-RAN) in which a centralized processor (CP) communicates with mobile users through base stations (BSs) that are connected to the CP via finite-capacity fronthaul links. Information theoretically, the downlink of a C-RAN is modeled as a two-hop broadcast-relay network. Among the various transmission and relaying strategies for suc...
